About

Dave at the mix position, 2017.

Beat 'n Track Recording is situated on a sweeping 17-acre wooded estate in Fallbrook, California, north of San Diego. No traffic, no immediate neighbors; in fact it is not unusual to see coyotes passing by the studio blissfully unaware of the tracks we're cutting inside!  Since 1994 we have been crafting beautiful records for artists, typically from the Southern California area, but increasingly worldwide, thanks to the internet.

Specializing in primarily acoustic and organic music productions, producer/engineer/owner Dave Blackburn brings a lifetime of knowledge as a guitarist, drummer, teacher, arranger and composer to each session, helping each artist realize their vision of their music as fully and lavishly as possible within a given budget.

The studio is a two room facility plus a third iso room suitable for amps. Both feature beautiful wood flooring and carefully designed acoustic trapping, by GIK acoustics and Primacoustic. Monitoring is through the incredibly accurate Chris Pelonis Model 42/42LF system as used by top artists such as David Crosby. Sixteen input channels of outboard mic preamps by Grace Designs, Phoenix AudioUniversal Audio, Focusrite, Vintech , and ART feed the UA Apollo x16 Heritage interface which connects to a new M1 Silicon Mac Studio running Logic Pro X, Izotope RX9 and DSP Quattro software.

The microphone collection is considerable for a small studio, boasting tube LDCs and non-tube SDCs from Vanguard Audio Labs, sE Electronics, DPAand Mojave Audio The venerable Shure SM7 is a favorite dynamic for vocals too. Hundreds of plugins by UA, Toneboosters, PSP, Soundtoys, Plugin Alliance, Sonimus, Sonnox, Softube, Lexicon, Izotope and many more are available to shape and build the mix. Numerous virtual instruments, such as those from Impact SoundworksNative Instruments, Ivory, Pianoteq, Spitfire Audio and G-Force allow for elaborate in-the-box productions and full project recall. Small ensembles, duos and solo artists have recorded their projects here since 1994.
